What is CBD and why is it so good for us?

Throughout history records have been kept of the use of medicinal cannabis but it is only in recent times that these natural compounds have been studied. The name for these compounds are phytocannabinoids of which there are over a hundred.

Cannabidiol, otherwise known as CBD is the most prevalent cannabinoid found naturally in Cannabis Sativa L. or the hemp plant. There are other well known compounds such as the illegal, psychoactive Tetrahydrocannabinol, THC.

In the modern day world of breeding cannabis all the focus has been on THC content, as this is psychoactive element. To such an extent that the CBD content has been neglected and almost forgotten, until now.

With the same skills and dedication breeders have now developed wonderful new strains high in CBD and so low in THC that they meet the EU regulations, so all the benefits, and more, without the fuzzy head!

As the World Health Organisation notes, "in humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential."

"The committee also investigated studies looking at the impact of CBD on other medical conditions, such as epilepsy, Alzheimer's, cancer, psychosis, Parkinson's disease, and numerous others. In several cases, it has been found that "may be a useful treatment for a number of other medical conditions." Further clinical trials are needed.

Another interesting group of biologically active molecules are the Terpinoids, or Terpenes. These give different flowers different aromas, some are citrusy, others Pine, or Woody. Cannabis is rich in Terpenes which are secreted through the hairs on the flowers of the female plant.

It is the terpene profile that gives a particular strain it's instantly recognizable smell. Imagine opening a tin of Super Lemon Haze smell and being hit by a wave of Limonene!

The most common Terpenes in Cannabis are:

Myrcene - The most common terpene, also known as couch-lock terp for its highly sedative effect.

Limonene - common in citrus fruits, an energetic, uplifting anti depressant.

A-Pinene - natures most common terpene, pinene tends to focus the mind by preventing the destruction of information transmitting molecules, resulting in improved memory.

Beta-caryophyllene - A gastro protective compound, with strong anti inflammatory properties

Terpinolene - a woody or smokey aroma, with a sedative effect, anti-bacterial and antioxidant properties.

Why are Terpenes important?

So why have we taken the time to introduce you to Terpenes?

Terpenes are beneficial on their own, however working together they enhance the overall effect of the strain. All of the cannabinoids work in synergy to produce what is called the Entourage Effect.

In other words, the sum is greater than the parts.

Our Endocannabinoid System

Each and every one of us has an Endocannabinoid System, or ECS. The ECS is responsible for two basic activities, setting our mood, energy and well-being as well as helping the body return to health after injury or disease.

The ECS is comprised of endocannabinoids, cannabinoid receptors and enzymes and these all play a vital role in promoting equilibrium and maintaining general health and wellbeing.

Our body naturally makes endocannabinoids - microscopic fatty substances or oils - in order to pass messages concerning functions such as memory, appetite and mood. These endocannabinoids then interact with, or bind to, cannabinoid receptors, of which there are two types - CB1 and CB2 - found in the central nervous system and the immune and gastrointestinal systems respectively.

Another way to understand this interaction is by using a lock and key analogy. The cannabinoid receptor is the lock - securing access to important bodily systems - and the endocannabinoids are the keys.

By enhancing our ECS with CBD we can increase the efficiency of it's actions.

As we began by saying Medicinal Cannabis has been used for centuries but we are only now beginning to see the results through independent scientific studies.

The University of Oxford, satisfied there are no negative effects, are investing £10 million to explore the health benefits, particularly when it comes to more serious conditions, such as epilepsy, Alzheimer's, cancer, psychosis, Parkinson's disease, and numerous other health issues.

Other conditions that have seen positive results are:

  • ADHD - Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
  • Anxiety & Stress
  • Arthritis
  • Asthma
  • Autism Spectrum Disorders
  • Autoimmune Disease
  • Cancer
  • Depression and Mood Disorders
  • Dementia
  • Diabetes
  • Eating Disorders
  • Heart Disease
  • High Blood Pressure
  • IBS
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Pain Relief
  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorders
  • Sleep Disorders.

Different Subspecies - Different Effects

Whilst all cannabis is classed as one plant, there are in fact three distinct subspecies; Cannabis indica, Cannabis sativa and Cannabis ruderalis.

Different subspecies of CBD Flowers have different genetic make up. All strains high in CBD are hybrids of indica and sativa. Some strains will be Indica Dominant, some Sativa and others will display qualities of both.

The effects of these strains are different and therefore different strains can be used to promote different aspects of your wellbeing.

Indica Dominant Strains are said to;

  • Relax Muscles
  • Promote Sleep
  • Relieve Pain
  • Reduce Seizures
  • Reduce Anxiety and Stress
  • Increase Appetite

Sativa Dominant Strains are said to;

  • Increase Focus
  • Improve Mood
  • Uplift Energy Levels
  • Reduce Depression
  • Relieve Nausea
  • Relieve Headaches

It should also be noted that the Terpenes in each of the above strains play in important part in driving the desired results.

We are only just beginning to understand the benefits of cannabinoids, multi million-pound research facilities across the world will continue to study this amazing plant and its life changing capabilities.
